Nick Kyrgios has stirred the pot over Emma Raducanu’s latest coaching controversy by attacking the British star’s critics. The 22-year-old is through to the last 16 at the Miami Open, after her latest opponent, McCartney Kessler, retired hurt on Sunday.

The 2021 US Open champion has defied her current run of form in Florida. She arrived in the US after winning just one of her five matches since the Australian Open and without a coach after splitting from Vladimir Platenik. That partnership lasted just two weeks and was the latest in a long line of short-term appointments by Raducanu.

Despite the situation, Raducanu blitzed past Sayaka Ishii in the first round before recording her best win of 2025 over American eighth seed Emma Navarro. She was in control at 6-1 3-0 against Kessler before the American left court with a back injury, and has appeared a resurgent force in Miami.

Kyrgios has enjoyed his own big moment in Miami, beating Mackenzie McDonald for his first competitive win since 2023. Karen Khachanov ended his campaign, but that hasn’t stopped him from vocalising about the Masters 1000 event.

He took to X after Brandon Nakashima beat David Goffin to move into the next stage of the men’s draw. However, he also references Raducanu’s progress, questioning those who criticised her latest decision to sack her coach.

“Nakashima has to be one of the most underrated players in the game,” he wrote. “Also people awfully quiet that Raducanu is winning now – where all the experts at now? Lol coach’s overrated.”
