The brash Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has made another bold claim.

Controversial Australian star Nick Kyrgios has never been one to be bothered by conventional thinking in tennis. The 29-year-old has this year returned to the ATP Tour after more than 12 months out with injury problems but remained in the headlines during his layoff.

Renowned for being outspoken, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist has recently been vociferous about the doping controversies surrounding the support. He’s publicly taken aim at both Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, describing their sanctions as a “terrible look for the sport.” However, his latest claim will have surprised even his most ardent supporters.

Last October, Kyrgios claimed that the prospect of silencing critics by winning a maiden Grand Slam title motivated his desire to return from his wrist surgeries. His only slam win to date came in the men’s doubles at the 2022 Australian Open, prevailing with compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Later that year he embarked on his run to the final at SW19, before being beaten by Novak Djokovic. However, the former world no.13 has now appeared to contradict his previous ambitions with a bizarre claim.

Speaking to promote the Call of Duty video game series, Kyrgios also talked tennis, adding: “I’d rather have a 10-game winning streak than a Wimbledon win. I’m not even joking.”

Given that winning the famous grasscourt event requires seven match victories anyway, the statement from the Canberra man is a questionable one. It’s also a notion that looks a considerable way off right now, with Kyrgios having won just one of his five professional matches this year.

His last ATP title win came nearly three years ago at the Washington Open. The star has now dropped outside the top-1000 in the world rankings, with his Miami Open campaign ended in the first round by Karen Khachanov.

Kyrgios has continued to weigh in on the tournament since his defeat. On Monday, he hit out on social media at critics of Emma Raducanu, arguing her recent coaching split seemed justified with the British star now into the last eight of the women’s draw.
