Nick Kyrgios has been blasted for his behaviour during his defeat to Karen Khachanov in the Miami Open. The hot-headed Australian was in uncharted territory when taking to the court for the second time in three days following his lengthy absence due to injury.

Kyrgios had hinted that an impressive comeback was on the cards earlier this week when cruising to victory over Mackenzie Macdonald in the first round of the competition. However, he was unable to build on that display against Khachanov.

Kyrgios lost his cool on several occasions during the defeat, though his most eyebrow-raising outburst came in the first set when he snapped back at a ball kid.

After missing his shot to claim a 5-4 lead in the first set, Kyrgios shouted towards his team in scenes which have not been unusual in years gone by. However, when turning to one of the young volunteers court-side, he gestured at wanting his towel to wipe his face.

The ball kid did not pick up on the sign though and bounced a ball in his direction. Whilst again gesturing for a towel, Kyrgios sharply asked: “Towel, bro. Is this a ball?”

Writing online after his defeat, Kyrgios acknowledged that his opponent – who he has publicly clashed with previously – was far superior on the day. He said: “Honestly today was a big stepping stone. Karen Khachanov was just too good.

“We played a great first set but encouraging that I could finish two matches this week, plenty to work on. Thank you, old friend and good luck for the rest of the tournament.
